Business Improvements Manager - (KTP Associate)

The Department of Management Science in partnership with Leonardo MW Limited (www.leonardocompany.com) are seeking to appoint a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) Associate in the area of Engineering Management, with a focus on Product Lifecycle Management.

Leonardo MW is one of the biggest suppliers of defence equipment to the UK MoD and generates exports worth over £1Bn p.a. Leonardo’s Infrared (IR) Detectors business operates from the Southampton site designing, manufacturing and supporting high performance, cooled Infra-Red detectors. This is a critical technology that sits at the heart of a broad range of electro-optical systems produced throughout Leonardo.

This project will see you working to improve the productivity of the business by developing their Product Lifecycle Management capability. In this role you will develop innovative new techniques while deploying agile business improvement methodologies. While doing this you will acquire skills in systems thinking and process improvement while developing your knowledge of business and management within a global engineering company. This role will also allow you to gain experience of a wide range of disciplines including Engineering, Production, Finance and Marketing.

The project is part of the Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) programme that aims to help businesses to improve their competitiveness and productivity through the better use of knowledge, technology and skills that reside within the UK knowledge base. To be considered for the role you will be educated to a minimum of a 2:1 Honours Degree in engineering or product design.

A further qualification such as an MSc in a business or a management related subject is desirable. You will already have some knowledge of project management methodologies and business improvement techniques (such as Lean or Six Sigma). It would also be desirable to have some experience of engineering management (such as configuration control and requirements management), operations management and product management.

In addition to the KTP core development training, you will have a dedicated training budget of £4000 to further support your career development.

Candidates must be capable of obtaining UK security clearance.

Supported by the academic team at the University of Strathclyde, and the company supervisor within Leonardo the KTP Associate will lead the development of the Product Lifecycle Management capability within the Leonardo Detectors Business.

By facilitating and leading an agile business improvement team the Associate will undertake productivity improvement activityincluding the design of engineering and operational processes, analysis of business performance data and implementation of
change initiatives.
