The Impacts and Benefits
Impacts for the Company
The KTP associate has engaged with the TechnipFMC New Energy and Flexible Pipe team and is becoming familiar with the tools and practices currently employed for FOWT analysis. This involvement has provided an understanding of the challenges faced and identified areas where the associate can contribute using their existing skillset. More Importantly, the associate has effectively collaborated with the TechnipFMC team to develop a concept for an automated cable configuration tool. This tool aims to determine initial cable system parameters and ensure a robust solution. Utilizing their existing skillset, the associate has begun creating and benchmarking this tool against current work scopes. This aligns well with the team's roadmap and addresses some anticipated challenges in commercial projects.
Impacts for the Academic Team
The Academic team is beginning to develop a better understanding of the practical and urgent challenges faced by TechnipFMC. Specifically, this collaboration is helping to define the design load cases critical for the design of the power export cable and the mooring system. There is potential for future conference and journal publications arising from this work. Through weekly interactions with the associate based at TechnipFMC and his close colleagues, the university team has gained valuable insights into the priorities of this industrial partner. These priorities include the need for quick, robust tools for the design of power cables without necessarily understanding the floating platform dynamics. Additionally, the team has gained insight into TechnipFMC's capabilities in conceptual and parametric design approaches. This collaboration has confirmed the potential for a conference paper and possibly a journal paper.
Impacts for the KTP Associate
Hands-on engagement with TechnipFMC FDT and the University team has enhanced the associate's practical understanding of FOWT power cables and mooring systems, addressing real-world design challenges. This was achieved through an overview and familiarization with TFMC's current technology and design standards assessment. The associate has successfully led the initiative on innovative design methodology and tool development, applying their expertise to create solutions that are both technically sound and industry-relevant. They are exploring opportunities for academic paper publications and knowledge transfer within the company, demonstrating strong alignment with both academic and industry goals.
