The Impacts and Benefits
Impacts for the Company
This KTP project offers several significant benefits to the company. The development of a novel inspection tool provides Cokebusters with industry-leading technology and enhanced capabilities, positioning the company for growth within the furnace inspection sector. Additionally, this higher-performing tool will support entry into new markets, aligning with Cokebusters’ ambitious growth objectives.
The KTP Associate brings invaluable experience in data processing and non-destructive testing (NDT) systems, providing crucial support in addressing operational challenges and interpreting complex results. This expertise has enabled benchmarking of all existing products and the optimisation of associated processes. In addition to their technical contributions, the Associate represents a valuable recruitment opportunity; their deep understanding of company operations positions them as a strong candidate for a long-term role.
The partnership formed with the University of Strathclyde has enabled Cokebusters’ to fast-track the development of a novel inspection tool as well as initiate the start of countless other innovative projects. The partnership has provided Cokebusters with access to state-of-the-art laboratory equipment and leading academic experts. This collaboration ensures Cokebusters remains at the forefront of innovation, contributing to technical and academic publications as well as presenting at international conferences.
Impacts for the Academic Team
The KTP has delivered strong academic value through the successful industrial implementation of research, demonstrating substantial real-world impact. The project has led to the development of potentially patentable technology, further enhancing the academic institution’s innovation portfolio. In addition, a conference paper has been published and a journal paper is in preparation., helping to promote findings within the academic community. The partnership has also broadened industrial engagement, resulting in a second KTP project and a PhD candidate whose research is directly aligned with the company’s technical challenges—strengthening collaborative links and providing valuable opportunities for future research and funding.
Impacts for the KTP Associate
From my perspective as a KTP Associate, this project has been an invaluable bridge between academia and industry, especially following my EngD. A key highlight has been the opportunity to take real ownership of a strategically important project, with clear responsibility for delivering innovation that benefits the company. This trust has accelerated my development and confidence in managing commercial challenges.
Support from the academic team, company supervisors, and Innovate UK has been essential, providing guidance and mentorship throughout. Being part of the KTP community has expanded my professional network across academia and industry. I have gained exposure to a new sector, deepening my understanding of its challenges and how innovation can offer practical solutions. Attending conferences and industry exhibitions has further enhanced this insight, allowing direct engagement with clients and stakeholders.
In terms of personal development, I have benefited from formal training in innovation strategy, risk mitigation, and an introduction to project management through the Ashorne Hill residential course. I am also set to attend an Agile Project Management course, which will further enhance my skills and future career prospects.
